Council activities are always a hot topic on social media.

It was announced this week that about 1200 advanced trees would be planted in nature strips in City of Greater Shepparton between June and September — and readers of The News had plenty to say about it online.

Alastair Wales: Should plant fruit tress so people can eat.

Loretta Cronyn: The trees look amazing, but sadly already some have been run over and flattened in Tatura.

Sharon Lee: We had one planted in summer, and left to fend for itself. As we were going away, we were unable to maintain water and sadly, it died.

Scotty Doherty: What a waste of money! I’ve personally seen at least 20 to 30 trees ripped out from the last lot that was installed throughout Shepp. Money could be better spent elsewhere!

Katrina Varapadio: I’ve noticed a lot planted around Tatura. They seem very close to the road. Likely to block signage and roots will probably lift paths. Also probably deciduous. Surely they could landscape existing bare areas like the big eyesore roundabout at the highway intersection.

Moira Brooks: Can they please make sure they are not planted under the power lines like has happened in the past?

Kim Furness: Great work — I like these news stories.

Kevin Krake: Great idea providing the trees that are planted are suitable for urban environments and not huge eucalypts as have been planted in the past!

Angie Ciavarella: Can they please make sure they are not obscuring the view of intersections and in particular any zebra crossings?

Luke Dealy: Yeah they’re good until all the roots grow and lift the lawn, nightmare to mow.
