Card decorating event brings joy

A card decorating event was held to celebrate the beginning of Advent at St Brendan’s Catholic Church on Sunday, November 27, and to help spread Christmas joy to those less fortunate.

More than 50 Christmas cards for residents who live at Mercy Place Ave Maria aged care facility have been created by Shepparton Catholics who attended the community event with the simple goal of getting creative and spreading the Christmas love to those who may otherwise be forgotten.

The 50 cards had their own personal touches added by their respective decorator, making each of the cards unique.

Event co-ordinator Katie Mills said she hoped the cards would bring joy to residents this year and said the atmosphere at the community event was a happy one.

“The process of creating them was very joyful, so we hope that comes through in the finished product,” Mrs Mills said.

Shepparton resident Annette Leahy delivered several cards from her handmade collection.

The card decorating event is just one of many gatherings held by St Brendan’s Parish to help engage with the local Shepparton community and promote the spirit of love, compassion and mutual respect.

The parish is hoping the card decorating event will become an annual community fixture.

“We are always trying new ways to connect with others and to bring our community together,” Mrs Mills said.

Caitlyn Mills, 9, was one of the participants. She enjoyed creating the cards and hoped they would be well received.

“It was fun and I enjoyed it, and I just really hope the cards bring a smile to some people who really need it at Christmas time,” Caitlyn said.
