NAGAMBIE

On the first weekend of summer the sun was out and the temperature was up, as was Graeme Galvin blasting his way to victory to win the December monthly medal.

A 75-7-68 annihilated the field by four strokes. Galvin displayed what he is capable of with the low gross score.

Runner-up went to Tim Baldwin with a steady 81-9-72 to equal par, producing his quality irons as always and Chris Roberts has turned Thursday chicken run form into Sunday form finishing in the top three again with a workman-like 100-27-73. Surely a win is not far away.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Terry Lowis amazing himself on the third, Michael Roberts going close on the 13th and Jeff Lodding tiptoeing one up to the 16th.

This Friday is a four-person Ambrose nine-hole event sponsored by Costa Mushrooms.

MERRIGUM

It was a pleasant afternoon for golf as Merrigum players contested a stableford event on Saturday. Finally, the weather is becoming more like we expect for this time of year, warm and without the wind we have endured over the past few months. There was plenty of run, but few took advantage of the conditions, with only Jeff Parry posting a score better than par.

He won the day with 39 points, four ahead of his closest rival.

It has been a good few days for Jeff as he seems to have found the elusive ingredient for good golf, consistency, for the time being at least.

For most of us good form is but a fleeting thing, something to be enjoyed whilst you have it, but with the knowledge that it will most likely abandon you in your time of need.

Jeff will be hoping not to become another victim of the fickle ways of golf.

He certainly didn’t fall victim to the handicapping algorithms though because he will now have an extra shot to play with next week.

Ash Sanders was the runner-up with 35 points, however, his score could have been much better had he not suffered the putting woes which seemed to afflict his playing group.

Ball competition winners were James Campbell, Andrew Wood and John Fuller, all of whom scored 34 points.

Nearest the pins were won by Woody on both the long par threes, the sixth and the 14th, Ash Sanders on the ninth and Jeff Parry on the jackpot 12th.

As alluded to earlier, Jeff Parry won last Thursday’s twilight competition, his score being 49-13-36.

He accounted for the largest twilight field of the season, with last week’s winner James Campbell finishing runner-up with 41-3-38 on a countback from Ash Sanders, who scored 43-5-38. Jimmy won least putts for the third week in a row with 15, this time on a countback from Woody. No nearest the pins went off.

The two-point cut was 38.5.

This Saturday’s event is pairs Ambrose, round two of the summer four-ball.

HILL TOP

Michael Downs won nearest the pin on the ninth.

A small field played a four-ball best-ball stableford event with the pair of Joe Deleso and Lou Villani coming in in first place with 44pts. Bryan Miller won the nearest the pin on the ninth.

Another good field participated in Thursday’s twilight stroke event sponsored by Mat Langley Electrical.

Other players winning golf balls were Jenny Asplin, Jeff Huddle 34, Noel Gorrill 34.5, Jacob Chessells, Sheryl Curran 35, Darren Carter, Geoff Coolahan and John Mapson 36.5. Nearest the pin on the 14th was Mark Jenkins. On Saturday a small field of women played a stroke event with Robyn Downs taking out first place with a nett 71 on a countback from Jenny Asplin who won a ball.

Nearest the pins third and ninth Robyn Downs, sixth and 14th Josie Deleso.

The men played for the December Monthly Medal sponsored by GMCU and the first round of the Summer Cup in ideal conditions.

Ron Popple with an excellent score of nett 65 took out the Monthly Medal and C-grade. A-grade winner was Garry Reese with nett 68 from Darryl Phillips 69.

B-grade winner was Neil McAntee with nett 71 from Peter Baird 72 on a countback. C-grade runner-up was Damian Smith 70. Balls down the line went to Steve Zolich, David Roberts, Ross Kelly 71, Steve Allison, Les Nation, Bruce Gross and John Fanning 72. Unfortunately Glenn Newton, who had an eight on the first (OOB second shot) and a six on the second (took a penalty after thinking he had hit the wrong ball forgetting he had changed balls after the first hole), finishing with 73 missing out.

Nearest the pins were awarded to, third Graham Meneilly (Lewis Homes), sixth Bruce Gross (Central Tyre Service), ninth and jackpot Ray Nicholson (Tatura Engineering), 14th David Roberts.

On Sunday in ideal conditions and the course looking a picture a capacity field competed in a men’s and women’s four-ball best-ball stroke event sponsored by Lipshut Law, Lipshut Plumbing and Meats & More Tatura.

With every four-ball event all golfers look for the perfect partner with a good handicap, Di Day and Leigh Thornton certainly did their homework asking Jenny Asplin and Joel Toohey respectively, with Di Day and Jenny Asplin winning the women’s event with 47pts on a countback and Leigh Thornton and Joel Toohey winning the men’s event, also with 47.

All players winning a two-night golf package at the Corowa Golf Club valued at more than $500. In second place were Josie Deleso and Sue Turnbull 47 and Les Walsh and Jody Webber with 46.

As well as a barbecue sponsored by Meats & More Tatura, which was greatly appreciated by all the golfers, there was also a VW car on offer for a hole-in-one on the ninth sponsored by Ken Muston Motors, unfortunately Bryce Wellington’s ball hit the flag, but instead of dropping straight down and going into the hole and winning the car it kept going, bad luck Bryce.

Nearest the pins went to, third Karen Ballantyne and Glenn Newton, sixth Rosemary Hepworth and Paul Capper, ninth Jenny Asplin and Ray Nicholson, 14th Phyl Fiddes and Peter Baird.

Special prizes were also awarded to Sharon and Bec Jeffers and Alex Howson and John Mapson, yes someone has to finish last. On Saturday the women and men will play a stroke event with the men also playing the second qualifying round of the Ssummer Cup. Women
